Phuket 7s 2024: A Tournament to Remember

Phuket 7s 2024: A Tournament to Remember

The sun-soaked fields of Phuket were alive with energy on the weekend of November 23rd and 24th as footballers from across the globe gathered for the Phuket 7s. While BFC didn’t field a full squad this year, the club was well-represented. The bat signal went up earlier in the year and players from around the world (USA, Germany, New Zealand, UAE, Japan, UK and Thailand) gathered to play in both the Over 45s, captained by Pabs and the Over 50s, led by Brian.

The action on the pitch didn’t disappoint. The Over 45s team showed tremendous grit, making it all the way to the semi-finals before a nail-biting 1-2 defeat ended their run. Meanwhile, the Over 50s battled hard in the Bowl competition, advancing to the semi-finals and giving their all in every match.

Golazo!

This year’s tournament carried special significance as a memorial to our fallen comrade, Jon Day. It was an emotional and unforgettable moment to have Jon’s brother, Rob, join us on the pitch. He not only played with heart but also delivered the goal of the tournament.

Controlling the Game

Off the pitch, the weekend was filled with everything that makes tournaments like this special: camaraderie, shared laughter, and the kind of stories that will be told for years to come (with a few destined to remain forever in Thailand!). It was also a chance to reconnect with familiar faces, including the ageless Phil Lowes, who continues to defy the years both on and off the field.

The Phuket 7s wasn’t just about football—it was a celebration of friendship, memories, and the game we love. For some, it was a first experience of the tournament’s unique mix of competitive edge and light-hearted fun. For others, it was a return to a cherished tradition, a chance to revisit the pitch and the bonds formed there.

As we look back on the weekend, we’re reminded of the power of football to bring people together, to honor those we’ve lost, and to create moments that last a lifetime.
